Green Lindt, 8″x8″ Pastel Painting
December 21, 2007 by christeenswan
I always thought it was wierd that work in pastels are usually referred to as pastel paintings. *smiles* It was a kick to work on this, as I haven’t picked up a pastel in probably 3 years now. I enjoyed playing around with the colors, but wasn’t too crazy about the rough texture of my paper (Mi Tienes, Black). During one of my last forays into Art Store Bliss, I saw a pastel paper that looked like fine sandpaper. I want to try it!
I swear, I’m like a wayward kid when I get into an art store. I have to examine everything, admire each goody, check out this, check out that, imagine what I could do with that thing over there, and oo! Look at that! What’s that for?? Dreamy sigh…look at all the different kinds of paper…. *melts*
Yeah. I usually have Iain with me, because at some point my checkbook and I need rescuing from all the creative temptation. :) What a great guy!
Hope you’re having fun, enjoying the holidays… Merry Christmas!

How gorgeous and textury! I know what you mean about the nomenclature ‘painting’ for pastels. They seem like really juicy drawings to me! I’ve been feeling the same way about my new Schminckes and inks and pens as you describe feeling in your art store. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
I hope you had a great holidays! How did you get to see your posts on spam blogs? Is there anything you can do about it…horrible! enjoy 2008 and hope to see a lot more of your inspiring work.

Hello Christeen,
I just wanted to stop by and let you know how much I enjoyed your website and artwork. Keep up the great work. All the best.

Pastel can be drawing or painting, or a mixture of both … I don’t consider many of my pastels to be drawings because the sticks weren’t used in a linear way to create them. When you block in masses of colour for an underpainting, use the sides of the pastels and use tools such as a brush to erase, a tortillon to blend or a Colour Shaper to push the pigment around, it is hard to think of the process as drawing!
Love the colour you’ve put into this. Try the sandpaper … you can build up so many layers on it.
Glad to read that you’re back in the art “saddle” after your recent disaster! I have a photo somewhere of my pastel box after I knocked it over during a commission … I can laugh about it now …!
